About - North Central Co-op

Why Co-op

We’re a community-driven business owned by people just like you. Together, we help fill our community’s cup—offering locally sourced products you love while supporting programs that make a real difference in our neighborhoods.

Cheers, YEG!

Picture this: a small group of ordinary people gather to celebrate the opening of a humble meat locker in Stony Plain, AB, over 75 years ago. Drinks are shared, toasts are made, and our Co-op is born.

While a lot has changed over the years, the core of what we do remains the same: bringing people together. Whether you’re celebrating life’s biggest milestones or enjoying a quiet evening with close friends, we’re proud to be a part of those moments.

Today, as one of Alberta’s largest member-owned co-operatives, we’re owned by over 120,000 members from all walks of life across Edmonton and the surrounding areas. What started with just a few ordinary members has become a force for positive change, making a lasting impact on our communities.

With liquor locations in Edmonton, St. Albert, and Spruce Grove, we encourage you to visit us. Since we live here, too, we’re big on getting to know our members (especially over drinks).

Become a Member

Co-op is a different kind of business. And that difference begins with membership.

You don’t need to be a member to shop at Co-op, but you’ll miss out on the benefits of belonging to our business.

At Co-op, membership isn’t a rewards program. It means you own part of your local co-operative association. As an owner, you can participate in the democratic decision-making process by asking questions, voting on resolutions, electing board members, or even sitting on the board yourself.

Each year, local co-ops may return some of their profits to members based on how much you shop with them and how well the business performs. Some of this is returned as equity, which is like a savings account that grows over time.

We’re more than just a place to shop. We’re a business built to support our community and meet the needs of our members. Decisions and policies on membership are made locally and vary between co-op associations.
